Phthalic anhydride (PA) is a foundational intermediate chemical with broad industrial utility, primarily serving the plasticizers, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR), and alkyd resins sectors. The compound's critical role in the construction, automotive, marine, and coatings industries positions it as a bellwether of industrial-chemical demand cycles.
The global PA market entered 2025 on a trajectory of measured recovery following supply-chain disruptions and demand volatility experienced across 2022–2024. Capacity rationalization in Europe, combined with robust downstream demand expansion in South and Southeast Asia, has reshaped the global trade map. China continues to dominate both production capacity and domestic consumption, though rising local feedstock costs and environmental compliance requirements are reshaping the country's cost competitiveness.
Chem Reports estimates the global phthalic anhydride market was valued at approximately USD 5.8 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 8.7 billion by 2036, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.6% between 2025 and 2036. Volume demand is projected to grow from roughly 5.1 million metric tons in 2024 to approximately 7.3 million metric tons by 2036.
Key structural growth drivers include infrastructure investment cycles in emerging economies, lightweighting trends in automotive manufacturing, and expanded adoption of flexible PVC in construction. However, the industry faces structural headwinds from regulatory pressure on phthalate-based plasticizers in Western markets and rising substitution from bio-based alternatives.
A major geopolitical variable for the 2025–2036 forecast window is the ongoing USA–Israel–Iran conflict dynamic, which carries direct implications for feedstock (o-xylene, naphthalene) supply chains, shipping route security in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea, and energy cost trajectories globally. Chem Reports dedicates a dedicated section of this report to this analysis.

Phthalic anhydride (PA; CAS No. 85-44-9; molecular formula C₈H₄O₃) is a white, crystalline organic compound at ambient temperature and transitions to a clear, colorless molten liquid above its melting point of approximately 131°C. The compound carries a characteristic sharp, irritating odor and exhibits moderate toxicity, with occupational exposure limits set across major regulatory jurisdictions.
PA is sparingly soluble in hot water, where it slowly hydrolyzes to orthophthalic acid. It demonstrates good solubility in common organic solvents including alcohols, benzene, and carbon disulfide. As an acid anhydride, it reacts readily with alcohols to form mono- and di-esters (the primary route to plasticizer synthesis) and with amines to form imides.
A key safety consideration is its reactive incompatibility with strong oxidizing agents. Under certain thermal conditions or in contact with materials such as copper oxide or sodium nitrite, phthalic anhydride may generate explosive hazard. Strict process safety management is required across handling, storage, and transportation operations.
Commercial phthalic anhydride production is based primarily on the catalytic vapor-phase oxidation of either ortho-xylene (o-xylene) or naphthalene using fixed-bed or fluid-bed reactor systems. Both routes employ a vanadium pentoxide/titanium dioxide catalyst system and air as the oxidant. Reaction temperatures typically range between 340°C and 400°C, and the crude PA product is recovered by condensation in downstream switch condensers.
The o-xylene route has supplanted naphthalene as the dominant production pathway globally, accounting for approximately 83–85% of total PA capacity. This transition reflects o-xylene's favorable economics as a downstream product of xylene isomerization in petroleum refining, wider commercial availability, and lower corrosion profile. Naphthalene-based production retains relevance in certain Eastern European, Chinese, and Indian facilities where coal-tar-derived naphthalene offers a cost advantage.

The global phthalic anhydride market navigated a turbulent five-year period from 2020 to 2024. The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a sharp volume contraction in 2020 as construction activity, automotive production, and marine coatings demand declined simultaneously across major end-use markets. A robust recovery began in 2021, driven by infrastructure stimulus packages, post-lockdown construction normalization, and restocking activity across the plasticizer and resin supply chains.
The 2022–2023 period was characterized by elevated feedstock costs driven by the geopolitical repercussions of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which disrupted European naphtha and o-xylene supply chains and forced energy-intensive European PA producers to curtail operations. Asia-Pacific producers, particularly in China and India, captured incremental market share during this period. By 2024, a degree of market equilibrium had been re-established, though European capacity remained structurally reduced relative to pre-2022 levels.

Plasticizers constitute the largest demand category, accounting for approximately 51% of global PA consumption. Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) and diisononyl phthalate (DINP) are the predominant PA-derived plasticizers, primarily consumed in flexible PVC applications spanning wire and cable insulation, flooring, wall coverings, and automotive interior components. The Asia-Pacific region dominates this segment, where flexible PVC penetration in construction remains high and regulatory pressure against phthalate plasticizers is less advanced than in OECD markets. Non-phthalate plasticizer substitution represents a structural headwind in Europe and North America, though the pace of transition has been moderated by cost differentials.
UPR represents the second-largest application and is the most dynamic growth segment. PA-derived UPR is a critical component in glass fiber-reinforced plastics (GRP/FRP) used across construction panels, boat hulls, automotive parts, wind turbine nacelles, and pipes. Growth in this segment is closely linked to infrastructure spending in emerging Asia and the ongoing global expansion of wind energy capacity, where GRP composites are integral to turbine blade construction.
Alkyd resins produced from PA are the workhorse binders in solvent-borne architectural paints, industrial maintenance coatings, and wood finishing products. The segment faces modest pressure from the global transition toward waterborne and high-solids coatings driven by volatile organic compound (VOC) regulations, but retains robust demand in developing markets where low-cost solvent-borne systems remain preferred.
Asia-Pacific dominates global PA production and consumption, collectively accounting for approximately 56% of global market value in 2024 and projected to reach 58% by 2036. China is the regional anchor, operating the world's largest integrated PA production base comprising facilities that together represent in excess of 3 million metric tons per annum of nameplate capacity. India represents the most rapidly expanding market, driven by strong infrastructure investment, growth in the paint and coatings sector, and expanding flexible PVC consumption. Southeast Asia is emerging as a meaningful secondary growth zone, with Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand recording above-average demand expansion for UPR and alkyd-resin applications.
The United States remains the most significant PA consumer in the Americas, though market growth is comparatively modest given the structural transition away from phthalate plasticizers in regulated end-uses. The domestic PA industry is characterized by a small number of large, integrated producers who benefit from advantaged access to o-xylene sourced from domestic refinery operations. The US market is projected to grow at a below-average CAGR of approximately 2.2% over the forecast period, with UPR and specialty applications partially offsetting volume losses in plasticizer grades.
European PA demand is undergoing a structural transformation shaped by the REACH regulatory framework's restriction of several key phthalate plasticizers and the broader drive toward a circular, low-carbon chemical economy. Several major European PA plants have permanently reduced capacity or been decommissioned since 2022. Germany, Italy, and Spain remain the primary consuming countries, with demand anchored in alkyd resin production for premium architectural coatings and UPR consumption in the marine and wind energy sectors. Import dependence on Asian PA is rising, exposing European processors to supply chain and currency risk.
The Middle East has emerged as a strategically important PA growth region, underpinned by downstream integration ambitions within national petrochemical programs and proximity to o-xylene feedstock from regional aromatics complexes. Saudi Arabia, through SABIC and affiliated entities, and the UAE represent the primary production investment vectors. However, the escalating USA–Israel–Iran geopolitical conflict (addressed in depth in Chapter 7 of this report) introduces significant uncertainty into the region's capacity expansion trajectory.
The global PA market features a moderately consolidated competitive structure at the top tier, with a small number of multinational chemical majors controlling significant shares of premium-grade capacity, alongside a large number of regional and local producers, particularly in China and India, competing primarily on cost. Key differentiators include feedstock integration, process efficiency, product quality consistency, and logistical proximity to major end-use clusters.

ANALYST NOTE: The following section represents Chem Reports' independent geopolitical risk assessment as of April 2026. This analysis is forward-looking and subject to rapid change. It is intended to frame strategic risk considerations, not to forecast specific political outcomes.
The triangular geopolitical dynamic involving the United States, Israel, and Iran has intensified markedly over the 2023–2026 period, with direct implications for energy commodity flows, maritime security, and regional petrochemical investment climates. The conflict's primary flash points — including proxy engagements across Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen, the ongoing situation in Gaza, and the persistent threat of direct Iran-Israel military escalation — have collectively elevated the geopolitical risk premium embedded in crude oil, naphtha, and aromatics markets globally.
For the phthalic anhydride supply chain, the most acute exposure vectors relate to: (i) feedstock price volatility, (ii) Persian Gulf and Red Sea shipping disruption risk, (iii) Middle Eastern PA capacity investment uncertainty, and (iv) broader macroeconomic repercussions on construction and automotive demand in affected regions.
Phthalic anhydride production is inextricably linked to aromatic hydrocarbon markets. O-xylene, the dominant PA feedstock, is a co-product of catalytic reforming and naphtha cracking operations closely tied to crude oil refining economics. Any sustained escalation of the USA–Israel–Iran conflict that results in Iranian crude oil supply disruptions — estimated at approximately 3.0–3.5 million barrels per day — would transmit directly into global naphtha and xylene price inflation.
The Strait of Hormuz, through which approximately 20% of globally traded oil and 30% of global LNG volumes transit, represents the single most critical maritime chokepoint for the PA industry's upstream supply chain. Iranian threats to restrict or mine Hormuz access — a stated defensive doctrine within Iran's military posture — would precipitate immediate crude oil price spikes and, by extension, sharp appreciation in o-xylene contract prices. Chem Reports models a Hormuz disruption scenario as potentially adding USD 80–120 per metric ton to PA production costs in a sustained disruption event.

The Houthi campaign of maritime interdiction in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, widely perceived as an Iran-linked proxy operation and a secondary front of the broader regional conflict, has materially elevated shipping costs and transit times for Asian-origin PA and its downstream products destined for European markets. Since late 2023, a substantial proportion of container and chemical tanker traffic has been rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, adding approximately 10–14 days and USD 300–500 per container equivalent in freight costs.
European PA processors who rely on spot or short-term contract supply from Asian producers have been among the most exposed to these disruptions. While established long-term contract buyers have been partially insulated, the heightened insurance premiums on Red Sea transits — War Risk premiums have increased by an estimated 5–10x since the onset of the Houthi campaign — represent a structural increase in the delivered cost of Asian-origin PA in European markets.
Several Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, most notably Saudi Arabia and the UAE, have announced integrated aromatics-to-PA capacity projects as part of broader petrochemical downstream diversification strategies. These projects represent meaningful potential additions to global PA supply over the 2027–2033 horizon. However, escalating regional conflict risk has lengthened the investment decision timeline for several such projects, as international engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contractors and project finance institutions have imposed elevated risk pricing on Middle Eastern petrochemical mandates.
Chem Reports recommends that PA producers, traders, and large-volume downstream consumers incorporate the following risk-mitigation frameworks into their strategic planning:
• Feedstock hedging: Implement structured o-xylene and naphtha price hedging programs to protect against short-duration Hormuz disruption spikes.
• Supply chain diversification: Reduce single-origin dependence on Middle Eastern feedstock by qualifying alternative supply from Asian and North American sources.
• Inventory management: Maintain strategic PA inventory buffers commensurate with a minimum 45–60 days of forward consumption.
• Contract structure: Incorporate force majeure and geopolitical escalation clauses in multi-year supply agreements.
• Alternative routing: Pre-qualify Cape of Good Hope shipping lanes and carrier relationships as a baseline contingency for Red Sea transit risk.
